The “Hiriko,” the Basque word for “urban,” is an electrical two-seater with no doors whose motor is found within the wheels and that folds up sort of a child’s collapsible buggy, or stroller, for simple parking.

Dreamt up by Boston’s MIT-Media lab, the concept was developed by a consortium of seven little Basque companies below the name Hiriko Driving Mobility, with a prototype unveiled by European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso. Demonstrating for journalists, Barroso clambered in through the fold-up front windscreen of the one.5-metre-long automobile.

“European concepts sometimes are developed within the u. s.. now an yankee plan is being created in Europe,” consortium spokesman Gorka Espiau told AFP.

Its manufacturers are in talks with variety of European cities to assemble the little cars that may run one hundred twenty kilometers (75 miles) while not a recharge and whose speed is electronically set to respect town limits.

They envision it as a city-owned vehicle, up for rent just like the fleets of bicycles offered in several European cities, or place up for sale privately at around twelve,500 euros.
